    ser português – poema

    March 26, 2012 /

O poema longo, ser português, acabou de ser publicado pelos cadernos de estudos de literatura Gávea-Brown da Universidade de Brown nos Estados Unidos. Gavea-Brown – A Bilingual Journal of Portuguese-American Letters and Studies 2010-2011 Gavea-Brown Publications was founded in 1980 under the auspices of the Center for Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, Brown University, its purpose being to make Portuguese literature and culture better known in the English-speaking world. With such a broad as well as ambitious objective, its plan was to publish titles in such rather diverse areas as translations of Portuguese literature, works relating to Portuguese Studies, and original creative works, in English or in Portuguese, which in some…

    The Democratisation of Poetry

    March 21, 2012 /

Bob Holman (USA) became a poet in the third grade when his teacher said, “That’s a very good poem, Robert. Where did you copy it from?” He has published five books, most recently The Collect Call of the Wild and a poetry CD, In With the Out Crowd. He has also helped to put poetry on TV, producing The United States of Poetry for PBS and appearing on MTV’s Spoken Word Unplugged. Currently, he teaches a course at Bard College, “Exploding Text: Poetry in Performance.” Holman works to change traditional definitions of poetry and to broaden its audience through work that has been noted for its raw power and irreverent…

    a foot in two worlds

    March 20, 2012 /

a foot in two worlds     on south terraced slopes vineyards rose in awnings of foliage feet lifted me up ten-foot ladders through green nearer the divine fingers easily pinched the dangling blue thirsty skin touched every soft fruit of the earth but not tin or plastic heels digging into grapes it was love stomping through the eve in granite vats tannin tingling skin before bed before blowing out the candle the blood of christ on my lips then hers   ©1998paulodacosta

    Palms

    March 14, 2012 /

Tomás leaned against the muddy wall of the trench furiously whittling a knotted tree branch. He paused, controlled his impatience, not wishing to carve the wrong groove. The knuckles of his hand were white, his fingers numb from the relentless work, the iced air. He unwrapped his frozen fingers from the wood and warmed his hands under his armpits before firing random shots into the night. He waited for the enemy sentinel to dutifully respond. The shots echoed over the hill. Tomás sighed. One more hour of silence would now settle over the trenches. Tomás sealed a rolled cigarette with his tongue and lit the smoke under his coat. As…

    As Borboletas de Prudêncio Casmurro

    March 14, 2012 /

Eugénio de Andrade – Between Brutality and Tenderness

    March 12, 2012 /

paulo da costa interviews Eugénio de Andrade Eugénio de Andrade is the most loved of the living Portuguese poets and the best known outside his country. He is thin, slightly hunched by the weight of nearly eight decades of life and there is a visible frailty in the way he walks. His hair is pure white. Of himself he has said he is a mixture of brutality and tenderness. In 1994 the city of Porto offered him a house with a view to the sea and the small colourful fishing boats rocking by the shore. The house was designed having in mind that a poet was going to inhabit it.…
